A bridge is a construction that joins two banks, shortens distances, often overcoming seemingly impassable obstacles. Lodge Most traditionally united men of different nationalities, various political beliefs, different confessions, various ages and life experiences. It is a society of free men, who, after a sound judgement, united their ideals with those of the freemasons. Men, who call each other brother, and feel like brethren. In a spirit of tolerance and with the help of rituals, symbols and lectures, they try to get to know themselves better, to morally and spiritually uplift themselves and thus the society as a whole.
Many books of different quality have been written about the freemasons. However, not much is available about masonry in the Czech Republic. We are happy to provide some basic facts on the structure and activities of one Prague lodge.
Lodge Most has, at present, 38 members. Four members are in their early thirties. There are seventeen between thirty and sixty years of age, and thirteen members between fifty and seventy. Four members are older than seventy.
Ten members have secondary school education, twenty-eight are university graduates. From this, seven members are artist, nine members work in the medical fields, four members have religious functions, and fourteen are in business and technical fields. Four members are retired.
Four members live permanently abroad, but they attend lodge meetings whenever possible. All are, at the same time, members of lodges in Israel, Canada and Germany. Four members were initiated in lodges in foreign countries during the period of their emigration in Holland, Canada and the USA. After the fall of the Iron Curtain and their return home, they were affiliated in Lodge Most.
Lodge meetings take place in a period from September to June, as a rule twice a month. Once there is open lodge and once there is a lecture devoted to symbols, history and subjects related to freemasonry. After open lodges there is a festive board, with its own peculiar style, based on the guild tradition of freemasons.
In addition, lodge Most is involved in charitable activities.
Members of Most visit regularly other lodges in the country, associated under Grand Lodge of the Czech Republic and also regular foreign lodges. Above all, meetings with freemasons from abroad, help towards understanding and tolerance between nations. This is a continuation of a tradition established in the twenties and thirties, when various nationalities living in the then Czechoslovakia where represented in lodge Most.
Several times in the year there are meetings with the ladies, families and friends, which regularly feature a cultural and social programme.
The brethren try to create together an environment which is a source of inspiration for profane life, and a place where it is possible to forget about the troubles of the normal day, to think about deeper meaning of our existence, to gain new mental strength. We believe, that this attempt is benefiting not only our members, but also all people.
